DUST & METAL (Cát bụi và Kim loại) là một bộ phim tài liệu sáng tạo (creative documentary) thực hiện bởi đạo diễn người Anh Esther Johnson, do Johnson và Live Cinema UK sản xuất với sự tài trợ của Hội đồng Anh, với sự hợp tác của Viện Phim Việt Nam tại Hà Nội và Trung tâm Hỗ trợ Phát triển Tài năng Điện ảnh TPD. Buổi công chiếu-diễn Dust & Metal tại TP. Hồ Chí Minh lúc 19:30 ngày 20/10 tại Không gian Nam Thi House, 152 Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa sẽ có phần nhạc được biểu diễn trực tiếp bởi nghệ sĩ Nguyễn Xinh Xô.
Với dân số 97 triệu người và 45 triệu xe máy đã đăng ký (cao nhất Đông Nam Á), gần như cứ hai người Việt sẽ có một chiếc xe máy. Những con đường đô thị trong nước, những con ngõ ‘hẻm’ vốn quá chật hẹp cho ô tô, tràn ngập việc vận chuyển hàng hóa đủ chủng loại, kích cỡ trên thùng sau của những chiếc xe máy, bao gồm cả máy giặt, cả gia đình và gia cầm. Tiếng động cơ và tiếng còi tạo nên một bản giao hưởng của cuộc sống Việt Nam. Chiếc xe máy như mang biểu tượng đại diện vừa cho công việc, giai cấp, vừa du lịch thăm quan, kỹ nghệ, vừa là sự thoát ly.
Nhìn về quá khứ vào thập niên 60 và 70 thế kỷ trước, xe máy đã dần thay thế xe đạp - phương tiện vận chuyển nhu yếu phẩm và tiếp tế cho Kháng chiến - để trở thành phương tiện vận chuyển chiếm ưu thế áp đảo cho tới tận ngày nay. Hiện tại, các hình thái đa dạng của phương tiện hai bánh vẫn chiếm áp đảo, giúp người dân đi lại giữa những con hẻm sâu mà các phương tiện bốn bánh đành phải ‘đầu hàng’. Với mục tiêu ngừng lưu thông các phương tiện sử dụng xăng dầu vào năm 2030 từ các nhà hoạch định đô thị, hình ảnh những dòng xe tấp nập hàng ngày của hôm nay biết đâu cũng sẽ thành quá khứ.
Kể lại những câu chuyện về “sự tự do” trong quá khứ và hiện tại ở Việt Nam qua lăng kính của phương tiện vận chuyển phổ biến nhất tại đây: xe hai bánh, Dust & Metal tôn vinh và chia sẻ di sản văn hóa Việt Nam – Vương quốc Anh, mang đến cho khán giả một bộ phim lưu trữ đặc sắc soi rọi một giai đoạn lịch sử Việt Nam. Kịch bản của phim tích hợp các đoạn trích từ cuộc phỏng vấn thực hiện bởi Esther Johnson với nhà làm phim nổi tiếng Việt Nam NSND Trần Văn Thủy và nghệ sĩ thị giác Đặng Ái Việt. Phần nhạc thiết kế âm thanh của phim do Nhung Nguyễn – nghệ sĩ tại Hà Nội thực hiện.
Dust & Metal đã tham gia nhiều LHP quốc tế, như LHP Tài liệu Sheffield 2022 và LHP quốc tế Đà Nẵng tháng 5/2023. Buổi công chiếu-diễn tại Tp. Hồ Chí Minh là một trong hai sự kiện đầu tiên có trình diễn trực tiếp của Nguyễn Xinh Xô tại Việt Nam tháng 10 năm 2023. Sự kiện này là một phần của Chương trình UK/Viet Nam Season 2023 của Hội đồng Anh Việt Nam, kỷ niệm 50 năm quan hệ ngoại giao giữa Vương quốc Anh và Việt Nam, và 30 năm Hội đồng Anh có mặt tại Việt Nam. Sự kiện cũng là hoạt động trong khuôn khổ Liên hoan phim quốc tế Tp. Hồ Chí Minh (viết tắt HIFF), với sự hỗ trợ từ VietFest thuộc công ty Time Universal, và công ty sự kiện Wonderlife.

Esther Johnson (Thạc sĩ, Khoa Nghệ thuật Đại học Hoàng gia) từng nhận Giải thưởng Philip Leverhulme về Nghệ thuật Biểu diễn & Nghệ thuật Thị giác, đồng thời là Giáo sư Nghệ thuật Điện ảnh và Truyền thông tại Đại học Sheffield Hallam, Yorkshire, Vương quốc Anh. Các dự án của bà bao gồm phim truyện Asunder, phim ngắn Liberation Radio, a ROLE to PLAY, Alone Together: the Social Life of Benches, và Chalk Trace. Tác phẩm của bà đã được trình chiếu ở triển lãm quốc tế tại hơn 40 quốc gia, được phát sóng trên truyền hình BBC và Kênh 4, với các tác phẩm âm thanh trên ABC Australia, BBC Radio 4, Resonance FM và đài RTÉ. Sinh ra ở Việt Nam và hiện sống ở Mỹ, nhà soạn nhạc kiêm nghệ sĩ biểu diễn nhạc điện tử Nguyễn Xinh Xô khởi đầu hành trình âm nhạc từ năm lên bốn, và sau hai thập kỷ đắm chìm vào thế giới violin cổ điển. Với tâm trí cởi mở, trí tò mò mãnh liệt, và một niềm ham thích dành cho âm thanh, anh đã dành thêm một thập kỷ để tìm tòi nét quyến rũ của nhạc thể nghiệm và nhạc điện thanh (electroacoustic), tìm kiếm những phổ âm đi từ sự tĩnh lặng ma mị cho đến sự chướng nhĩ của các âm thanh hung hãn. Âm thanh hiện nay của anh bao trọn tình yêu bất tử dành cho nhạc cổ điển lẫn ham mê khó cưỡng dành cho thể nghiệm âm thanh. Trong chuyến hành trình với âm thanh này, khán giả vẫn cảm nhận thấy xung động rất khẽ của nhạc truyền thống Việt Nam. Âm nhạc của Nguyễn Xinh Xô đưa người nghe vào một thanh trường đầy mê hoặc với những giai điệu ám ảnh, những hợp âm rải đa nhịp đầy thôi miên, dắt đưa họ đến nơi tri1 tưởng tượng và hư ảnh hội ngộ.

Nguyễn Xinh Xô nhận bằng Thạc sĩ Nghệ thuật khoa Electronic Music & Recording Media ĐH Mills, California, nơi anh theo học sáng tác nhạc điện thanh và nhạc máy tính với giáo sư Chris Brown, John Bischoff và Roscoe Mitchell. Anh là Chủ tịch chương trình Interactive Audio, Sound Arts, and Audio Technology tại Viện SAE tại Bay Area, California trước khi gia nhập ĐH Silicon Valley trong vai trò Giám đốc Công nghệ Audio và Âm nhạc.

DUST & METAL (CÁT BỤI & KIM LOẠI) is a creative documentary feature film by British director Esther Johnson, produced by Johnson and Live Cinema UK and funded by the British Council. The project was created by a unique partnership between Hanoi-based Vietnam Film Institute, and TPD: The Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents. The Cine-Concert Dust & Metal will be held in Ho Chi Minh City at 19:30, 20th Oct at Nam Thi House, 152 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, with the live performance by Xo Xinh.
With a population of 97 million, and 45 million registered motorbikes (amongst the highest in Southeast Asia) that’s almost one bike for every two people. The countries urban roads, and ‘hẻm’ alleys that are too narrow for cars, are awash with the transportation of goods of all types and sizes on the back of motorbikes, including washing machines, entire families, and chickens. The sounds of engines and horns create a symphony of Vietnamese life. A symbol of Vietnam and its history, motorbikes encompass notions of work, class, travel, technology, and escape
Looking back at history, in the 1960-1970s, motorbikes replaced the mass bicycle use - which was crucial for the transportation of supplies during the war in Vietnam to become the transport of choice nowadays. At present, the country’s urban roads are awash with various forms of two-wheels which help the people to navigate the “hẻm” too narrow for cars. With urban planners aiming to ban petrol/diesel motorbikes by 2030, the waves of traffic of today will become the past.
Presenting stories of ‘freedom’ in Vietnam past and present told through the lens of the country’s ubiquitous mode of transport: the motorbike, Dust & Metal celebrates, and shares UK-Vietnam cultural heritage while presenting to the audience a unique archive work illuminating a history of the country. The script integrates extracts from oral history interviews Johnson made with eminent Vietnamese filmmaker Trần Văn Thủy; and with visual artist Đặng Ái Việt. The sound design is by Nhung Nguyen, a Hanoi-based artist.
Dust & Metal has participated in many international film festivals, after a successful UK premiere at Sheffield Docfest in 2022 and Da Nang International Film Festival in May 2023. The Ho Chi Minh city event is one of the two first cine-concerts with Xo Xinh’s live performance in Vietnam this October. The event is part of UK/Vietnam Season 2023 by British Council Vietnam, which commemorates 50 years of diplomatic relations between the UK and Vietnam and the 30th anniversary of the British Council’s presence in Vietnam. The event is part of the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF), with support from VietFest by Time Universal and Wonderlife, an event company.

Director Esther Johhson
Esther Johnson (MA, Royal College of Art) works at the intersection of artist moving image and documentary. She is a former recipient of the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Performing & Visual Arts, and is Professor of Film and Media Arts at Sheffield Hallam University, in Yorkshire in the UK. Projects include feature film ASUNDER, and shorts Liberation Radio, a ROLE to PLAY, Alone Together: the Social Life of Benches, and Chalk Trace. Work has exhibited internationally in 40+ countries, and broadcast on BBC and Channel 4 television, with audio works on ABC Australia, BBC Radio 4, Resonance FM and RTÉ radio. Screenings include at Barbican, London; BFI London Film Festival; CPH:Dox, Copenhagen; ICA, London; NASA, California; International Short Film Festival Oberhausen; International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam; Istanbul Biennial; and Tate galleries, London.
Performer Xo Xinh
Vietnamese-born, American-based electronic music composer and performer Xo Xinh embarked on his journey into the realm of music at the age of four and spent two decades after that immersed in the world of the classical violin. With an open mind, fierce curiosity, and a passion for sound, he has spent another decade delving into the captivating allure of experimental and electroacoustic music, exploring sonic spectrums ranging from ethereal silence to the cacophony of brutal noises. His current music encapsulates his undying love for classical music and his unbridled passion for experimental sound. Amidst this sonic journey, one can feel the subtle pulse of Vietnam's traditional musical essence. Xo Xinh's music takes listeners on a mesmerising aural landscape with haunting melodies and hypnotic polyrhythmic arpeggios, guiding them to a place where imagination and hallucination conflate.
Xo Xinh's compositions have been selected to be performed throughout the U.S., and in Europe, Australia, and South America including Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music, Australasian Computer Music Conference, Electronic Music Midwest Festival, PNEM Sound Art Festival, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, International Electroacoustic Music Festival of the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, Monsoon Music Festival, Sheffield DocFest.
Xo Xinh received an MFA in Electronic Music & Recording Media from Mills College, California, where he studied electroacoustic composition and computer music with Chris Brown, John Bischoff and Roscoe Mitchell. He was the Program Chair of Interactive Audio, Sound Arts, and Audio Technology at SAE Institute in Bay Area, California before joining the University of Silicon Valley as the Director of Audio and Music Technology.
